Further evaluation by a main sewer solutions specialist
Ken’s Sewer Service has existing customers, home buyers and sellers all across the Twin Cities and surrounding suburbs reach out everyday inquiring about main sewer line excavations and trenchless repairs and replacements. Whether you have been experiencing frequent back-ups or abnormally wet areas on your lawn, it’s worth the time and money to have your main sewer line inspected. Being proactive could prevent more costly issues in the future.
First things first, if it hasn’t recently been done, start with a main line cleaning. The most affordable option to maintain the integrity of your sewer line is a cleaning with a cable and blade, unless our customer prefers a hydro-water jet cleaning. The second step is a video camera inspection starting from the sewer clean-out access. This provides a visual look inside your line so we can determine what the sewer pipe material(s) is, any issues and at what footage it’s located, and how long your sewer line is to the city main. Typical issues are tree root intrusion, scale/rust and sludge build-up, toilet paper and/or foreign objects, line breaks and line back-pitch (no or negative slope).
The majority of sewer line back-up issues, such as tree roots, build-up and toilet paper, if kept up with on an annual cleaning basis, can be solved by cable cleaning or hydro-jetting. If the issues are more severe, such as line breaks/holes, back-pitch, total collapse, it’s imperative for the continued function of your home’s plumbing system to strongly consider having a sewer line inspection and no-obligation quote for repairs/replacement done.
The two options for repair/replacement are to dig a trench in your yard around the sewer pipe or use trenchless sewer line repairs. A trenchless sewer repair is time and cost-effective while requiring little to no digging. Your mainline needs to be a candidate to have a no digging option.
- Pipe lining – If the damage to your sewage pipe is minimal, pipe lining (CIPP / cured-in-place piping) can be used to insert an inflatable tube covered in epoxy into your sewer line. From there, the tube is inflated, pressing against the existing line. While it’s up against the existing sewage line, the epoxy cures and hardens, repairing the leak. The inflatable tube can then be removed and the sewer line repaired. If properly maintained, CIPP can last up to 50 years.
- Excavation – A sewer line trench excavation ensures that your sewer line is completely repaired. The yard area where the repair/replacement is needed is dug up to expose all necessary damaged piping. Whether the pipe requires a total replacement or only a certain section, full access to the sewer line is available. Another positive aspect for this method is that an outside clean-out can be added as well. This is especially essential if your home does not currently have an indoor or outdoor clean-out. Excavation is a very reliable way to repair a faulty sewer line or replace it with an entirely new pipe. The only disadvantage to this method is the additional cost for lawn and landscaping.
If you are in need of a camera inspection of your main sewer line or to simply schedule a cleaning, please reach out to Ken’s Sewer Service today and schedule an appointment. We have been in the industry long enough to know what you need done and who to refer you to if you’re in need of an excavation.
Be proactive! Don’t get stuck on the weekend or holiday with a main line backing up.
Sanitary sewage drain lines always seem to back-up at the most inconvenient times. Whether it’s at night, on the weekend, during a holiday, or about to leave for vacation. When experiencing a drain back-up it’s smart to act as soon as possible so the problem doesn’t worsen. Most clients can wait until the next day to clean their slow drain line but you shouldn’t wait any longer to address a drain line that’s clogged/plugged and/or backing-up. Cleaning basement drain lines on a consistent basis is smart and will save you money in the long run. This goes for both residential and commercial properties.
