Is it Finally Time to Replace Your Throne?

We all know plumbing repairs can be costly, and there is an endless amount of fixtures and mechanicals that use water everyday to keep your home up and running. We can all agree that indoor plumbing is a modern convenience we are accustomed to and pretty much can’t live without. If you own your home, I’m sure you can also agree that it seems like plumbing leaks, clogs and fails happen suddenly, usually unexpectedly and at the worst possible time. Any time your plumbing fails, it’s not great, but it’s especially not fun when the issue is with the bathroom toilet. It’s my favorite modern convenience, which is a blessing when it’s working properly and a curse when it has constant issues.

If you have been dealing with a troublesome toilet or just thinking about upgrading, let’s run through when to repair or replace. Please keep in mind that all toilets are different. There are different sizes, heights, inside tank parts, flush-styles, flush power, design configurations and of course, product quality, durability and pricing.

When are repairs warranted?

If you have a newer toilet, seemingly free of known manufacturer defects, it’s a good candidate for minor repairs such as replacing a broken toilet tank part or re-setting a rocking toilet by checking to make sure the flange and bolts are secure, or adding shims and caulking in place.

If you have an older toilet (10+ years old) that has been properly maintained and treated well, replacing a fill valve, ballcock or handle is completely normal as these parts become worn out over time.

When should you consider replacing?

Depending on the brand/manufacturer and usage, a toilet can last as little as 10 years or decades upon decades. Typically, toilets won’t just stop working, but over time they will become less efficient and start to show signs of failure. If your toilet is showing any of the signs below, we recommend scheduling Ken’s Sewer Service for an appointment with one of our professional plumbers who can properly advise you if it’s simpler and more cost effective to repair or to install a brand new toilet.
