A home’s water plumbing system deals with a lot of pressure and temperature changes throughout the day and night. One of the first signs of a potential issue, besides a noticeable leak, is when your pipes start making noises. There are several different reasons, whether the noise is constant or intermittent, for these sometimes low sounding and sometimes unmistakably loud and shocking sounds. Here are the typical noises and causes that should be looked into further.

Banging or Hammering Noises: Issue with normal water flow or high water pressure.

Whistling Noises: Faucets may indicate a worn down, dirty or loose part or piece of hardware. Toilets may indicate needing new toilet tank parts. If the whistling noise is heard throughout pipes everywhere it could be from build-up, a worn water supply valve or an ineffective pressure regulator.

Vibrating or Humming Noises: Excessive water pressure & your system capacity can’t handle the force.

Rattling or Squeaking Noises: Loose, unfastened or uninsulated pipe in the wall, floor or ceiling. Copper lines carrying hot water are most common as these expand and contract due to the water’s temperature.

Dripping or Ticking Noises: Could be a concerning drain issue or leak. Or, thermal expansion or pressure.

Gurgling Noises: A clogged drain or passage in the pipe from a foreign object or build-up.
