Please do your due diligence before trusting those companies offering mainline cleaning for under $100. Please understand there’s always a catch. They just want a foot in the door. They are getting your attention because they are spending thousands of dollars in online advertising and showing up first on the search engines. Most smaller companies can’t compete with the online pricing to show up anywhere near the top of the page. Scroll down in your web searches to the organic section (past all the paid ads) where you need to earn a spot and can’t pay your way to the top. We have been around since the early 1970's and that’s a statement in itself. Most of our new clients are sent to us through word of mouth referrals and we thank all our customers so much for this.

Have you ever experienced a clogged drain?

Whether you own or rent your home or business property, I would expect you have experienced at least one drain clog at your property. Your drain’s plumbing sees all sorts of use throughout the day, and it’s almost impossible to keep your drains completely free of food, grease, debris, hair, lint, scale, tree roots, toilet paper plugs, etc. When the debris down these lines build-up over time, they eventually clog the drain lines and main sewer lines.

Some people try liquid drain cleaners, plungers or DIY snaking first - and why not, it’s cheap & sometimes can temporarily do the job to get some drainage. What you should know is that chemical cleaners can damage pipes or if not used property, solidify in the pipe creating additional blockage. Plungers may work better for the toilet than the bathtub or sink – using a plunger in the bathtub or sink can actually pull the clog up the drain line instead of out, creating a super big and unsanitary mess or making the clog worse than before. Hardware store bought manual augers can get stuck in your drain lines if you aren’t familiar or experienced using these.

At Ken’s Sewer Service, we use commercial grade auger machines with long enough cables and the correct size blades for your different size drain pipe, clearing blockages all the way through your drain lines, restoring normal water flow and drainage. Let our decades of experienced and professional drain technicians help you with all of your slow, clogged or backing-up drain lines to get the job done right so you can have piece of mind your home’s plumbing is in good hands.

Why do drains clog?

Everyday all types of debris such as hair, soap, grease, food waste, toilet paper, sanitary products, lint, dirt, mineral build-up and accidental small objects that have been flushed away can cause a clog in any part of the drain lines. Sometimes these materials don’t even make it far down the drain – they can get stuck and clog up in the garbage disposal or p-trap.

Maintaining proper cleaning and regular maintenance of your drains is an essential and crucial aspect in keeping your home’s plumbing system working well. By understanding a little bit more about your main sewer line and drain line plumbing, how they can become easily clogged or compromised, you may be able to notice the first signs that you either have a stack pipe issue, floor drain issue, main sewer line issue, or a combination before an emergency back-up occurs.

Anywhere water runs throughout your home, it exits down an internal and vertical wastewater drain pipe or stack/vent pipe that connects to your main sewer line. Each bathroom tub/shower, sink, toilet, kitchen sink, dishwasher and laundry tub/sink has a horizontal pipe that connects to a vertical stack pipe. If your drains are slow or your toilet starts gurgling or doesn’t flush completely, a clog is most likely the culprit.

The wastewater drain pipe (stack pipe) and the floor drain both connect directly to your mainline, which is your home’s main sewer line that runs underground and connects to the city’s main sewer system. All wastewater eventually makes its way through your main line and out to the city connection. A clog in your main line is typically caused by root intrusion and scale build-up. When debris that doesn’t naturally break down like baby wipes, diapers, sanitary products, etc. make it to the main line, they attach to the roots and scale eventually resulting in an even worse back-up.

Clog prevention tips:

  1. Use a hair and soap scum catcher for your bathtub/shower; brush your hair and dispose of it in the trash before you wash it; if you bathe your pet, put a washcloth or paper towel down over the tub/shower drain to collect hair. Also, don’t wash hair down the bathroom sink.
  2. Only flush human waste and toilet paper down the toilet. Don’t flush any type of wipe or personal sanitary products (even if they are labeled as ‘flushable’), only dispose of these in the garbage. Don’t flush hair, dental floss or any other stringy or dense/bulky materials.
  3. Never dispose of excess amounts of food, coffee grounds or grease in the kitchen sink.
  4. Keep a disposable lint trap over your washing machine hose.

Are you a first time home buyer? What you should always know about plumbing and drains.

1. It’s very important to locate your home’s main water supply shut-off valve and the main sewer line clean-out access. Make sure both are functioning and if you do not have a proper main sewer line clean-out, consider installing one or more. During the home inspection, ask your home inspector where these are both located. And, don’t forget to have a main sewer line inspection as well. The minimal expense for this additional inspection will be well worth the money to examine the condition of the sewer line.

2. Annual main sewer line and drain cleaning is always recommended as a preventative maintenance task. Keep your drains clear to avoid messy and untimely back-ups, flooding and expensive repairs/replacement and clean-up.

3. Each water fixture should have its own shut-off valve so if there is a leak or pipe burst, you aren’t forced to turn off the water to your entire home until a plumber is available to fix the issue. Consider adding new and replacing leaky shut-off valves.

4. Living in Minnesota, it’s very important to know how to properly winterize your in-ground sprinkler and outside water faucets. Additionally, if your home’s faucets and drains are located on an exterior wall, make sure the plumbing is insulated properly so the pipes don’t freeze in the sub-zero temps.

5. Familiarize yourself with the signs and sounds of a water leak. A slow leak can worsen at any time, and under certain circumstances and pressure the pipe can burst completely. If you hear dripping, running toilets or running water inside walls, excess moisture, soft walls, water stains – contact a plumber without delay. A leaking pipe will not fix itself. Pay attention to your monthly water bill rates – a higher than normal bill could indicate a water leak, especially if your water consumption wasn’t increased by an additional person or people staying at the house.

6. If you have a garbage disposal, remember that this appliance isn’t a miracle worker and it will get clogged if you don’t treat it properly. Do not overstuff it with food and debris or put the wrong ‘no-no’ foods down the line.

7. Do your due diligence and know the piping materials throughout your home. Older homes typically were built using cast iron, galvanized steel, lead and copper. Newer homes and homes that have had plumbing repairs and replacements use PVC, ABS, PEX and copper.

8. Find out the age of the home’s HVAC, water heater, water softener, toilets, etc.

9. Make sure you have the basic tools needed in a pinch for DIY fixes – flashlight, rubber gloves, tape measure, power drill, plunger, drain auger & toilet auger, basin/pipe/adjustable wrenches, pliers, plumber’s thread tape, duct tape, plumber’s putty, caulk and a shop vac.
